Personal Trainer Terri Truman is back with tips on how to manage your body temperature during physical activity. She teaches us that there are three ranges for our core body temperature: normal, hypothermia and hyperthermia. Ideally, your body will always stay in the “normal” range, especially while hiking and climbing in the mountains, and Terri’s here to teach you how!

Dave Cohn’s Summit of Pequeno Alpamayo

August 20th, 2014

After a weeklong expedition in Bolivia Dave Cohn is back at home to celebrate an incredible accomplishment; summiting Pequeno Alpamayo.

Dave has been a longtime climber of Berg Adventures and his determination to achieve his goals has always been an inspiration. On August 17th, he and BAI guide Osvaldo woke up at 3am to begin their summit attempt. It was a long day and the mountain presented them with some challenges but they were focused and ready to take on whatever came their way. At 11:30am Dave and Osvaldo stood on the summit of Pequeno Alpamayo at 17,618ft/5,370m. To listen to Dave’s summit call check out his summit day dispatch. For some amazing photos that Osvaldo took of their summit day click here for the summit day recap.

Congratulations on a great climb Dave! We can’t wait to see what’s next!

The New Summit Sign on Mount Kilimanjaro

August 15th, 2014

Anyone who has been to the summit of Kilimanjaro will remember the motivation to take the final steps to the top of the mountain: a historic, weather beaten wooden sign that already looked familiar to them from photos they had seen in books. For years climbers have taken photos in front of it, hung flags around it and felt accomplished by seeing the words “Congratulations, you are now at Uhuru Peak”.

The original wooden summit sign

In March of 2012 the old crooked, weather beaten sign was taken down and replaced with a new one. It was plastic! And it was a very odd shade of green that did not show well in photos. At the same time a green plastic sign was placed on the Crater Rim at Stella Point. It was still an emotional and gratifying moment to reach the Crater Rim and have BAI chef Yona hand you a can of Red Bull with a smile; but somehow the moment just did not seem the same in photos.

We appreciate the action taken by KINAPA, Kilimanjaro Park. They listened to the guides and climbers from around the world who said, “bring back the wooden sign.”

Berg Adventures Kilimanjaro team reached the Summit on August 11th to find a new sign welcoming them to the highest point in Africa. The more photogenic wooden sign will be a part of climbers experience on Kilimanjaro for many years to come and our team members were excited to be one of the first to make memories in front of it.

Aconcagua climbers take a break to hydrate

Personal trainer Terri Truman is here to tell you how you can help your body feel its best by understanding the signs of not getting enough hydration.

“Mountaineering or trekking at altitudes can present its own set of hydration challenges. Increase your fluid intake at higher altitudes to compensate for exertion and aridity. The key is drink before you’re thirsty: if you wait, you’re probably already dehydrated!”

Mount Elbrus Expedition Recap

July 17th, 2014

From city to summit our Mount Elbrus expedition team can say they have been to Russia and seen it all! After two weeks in one of Berg Adventures favorite locations our climbers have returned to their homes of Canada, the United States and Sweden with stories of accomplishments and memories that will last a lifetime! Which way to the summit of Mount Elbrus? Our summit team will show you the way on our photo recap.

The trip began in the historical streets of St. Petersburg where the team toured the streets and visited some of the famous sites like the Hermitage, St. Isaac’s Cathedral and even a boat tour along the canal. One climber, Micheline thibodeau even ran the 10 KM “White Nights” race in the morning before sightseeing. After a busy first few days in St. Petersburg the team was off to explore another great Russian city; Moscow. Some of their favorite places in Moscow were the Kremlin and viewing St. Basil’s Cathedral lit up at night. Before they departed for the mountains the team got up nice and early for a very special tour; a visit of Lenin’s Mausoleum in the Red Square where people can view the body as it has been preserved.

Our trip into the mountains was one the team will never forget. Seeing our dear friends, who greeted us at the airport, and stayed with us throughout the climb was a great way to start off our climb of Europe’s tallest peak. Though conditions on the mountain presented us with challenges our strong group of climbers were determined and well equipped. Reaching the top of Mount Elbrus at 18,586ft/5,665m was incredibly rewarding, especially since the weather was perfectly clear and allowed us incredible views of the surrounding Caucasus.

The team experienced such a warm welcome from the people of the Khumbu. They met many of our Sherpa friends who were happy to bring them into their homes and show them what life is like in the valley. When the team arrived at Everest Base Camp they were invited for lunch at the SPCC Icefall doctor’s tents, where they spent some time with the incredible people who work so hard on expeditions every year.
