Lodges versus Camping in Nepal

February 15th, 2014

We are frequently asked why we choose to stay in lodges instead of tents on the Everest Base Camp Trek. Some companies argue that camping offers more freedom and comfort. We maintain that this is absolutely not true in the Khumbu Region of Nepal and here is why.

1. Tea Lodges are an important part of the cultural traditions of Buddhist traders and pilgrims who have traveled between Nepal and Tibet for centuries. Lodge design today follows old traditions and reminds visitors of the rich history and culture of the region. Nearly all Sherpa lodges are constructed in a similar fashion following these long-standing tradition. The main room of the lodge is a large rectangular shape surrounded by windows with window seats and tables on three sides. In the middle of the room is a wood stove to keep the area warm. Traditionally, travelers and pilgrims slept on the window benches in these common rooms. Today, travelers stay in bedrooms located elsewhere in the main lodge or more commonly in adjacent buildings and the main room is used as the space for dining, socializing and relaxing.

2. A selling point companies use to promote tent treks is that the food catered to the group and the team has their own cook. Berg Adventures treats meals the same way any tenting trek does which means we do not buy our meals from our lodges. We carry all of our own dishes, utensils and cookware as well as all of our own food. We also bring our own cook and support staff who will expertly prepare three meals plus a large afternoon snack every day. By bringing our own staff and supplies we can offer a higher level of service and can control the food safety and hygiene of the meals we prepare. Plus, we provide a greater level of variety offering a mix of local dishes and comfort foods from home. Think of it this way, when you trek with us, you get the benefit of having expedition quality meals and you get to stay in lodges!

3. Relaxing in the warmth of the lodge dining room is a wonderful way to end a long day of trekking. While bedrooms are rarely heated in the Khumbu, the dining rooms are. These dining rooms are a great hub of activity where you get to mingle with climbers, other trekkers and locals too. When you camp, you can end up feeling secluded and really miss out on the camaraderie of traveling in Nepal.

4. Wally Berg has been traveling to Nepal annually (often bi-annually) for over 25 years. During that time, he has developed close friendships with many lodge owners and other locals. This means you will be treated like family when you stay at or eat lunch in our carefully selected lodges. You’re not just part of any regular trekking team, your part of the Berg Adventures Team!

Terri’s Travel Tips

January 15th, 2014
Terri has been a long time climber of Berg Adventures. Here she is in Bolivia gaining some great mountaineering experience.

Terri has been a long time climber of Berg Adventures. Here she is in Bolivia gaining some great mountaineering experience.

My name is Terri Truman and I am a personal trainer and adventure traveller.

My outdoor resume includes multiple summits on Mount Rainier, Kala Patar and Kilimanjaro, and well as summits on Huayna Potosi, Pequeno Alpamayo, Mount Elbrus and Mount Toubkal. On two separate occasions, our groups attempted summit attempts on Aconcagua, only to be forced back to high camp due to weather.

For over 20 years, I’ve trained to participate in new and exciting adventures. Whether it`s playing competitive volleyball, rowing at the World Masters Games or preparing for an upcoming summit bid, training and preparation makes all the difference.

Whether your next destination is hiking through the Altas mountains, acclimatising on Cerro Austria or preparing for your own back country adventure, we can help prepare you physically and mentally for your journey.

We are just in the process of putting up our website, so please stay tuned for more tips.

Terri loves immersing herself in the culture of each place she visit’s. Here she is in Arusha, Tanzania checking out the local markets before her climb of Kilimanjaro.

TRAVEL TIPS

Half the fun of traveling is the anticipation of the experience. For months or years leading up to your departure, you will have chosen your travel consultant, gathered gear, read about the area, reviewed the maps, chatted with other travellers and confirmed those last minute details.

Primarily, one of the most important aspects contributing to a successful climb will be your physical conditioning. If you are going to participate in an endeavour such as mountaineering, physical training is an essential component to achieving your goal. Strength training not only develops muscular strength, muscular endurance, improves performance, but it can also help muscles recover from the daily physical stress and reduce the risk of injury.

Training can enhance your mountain experience but is not a guarantee for success. It will however increase your chances as summit day approaches. Along with training, don’t forget that stretching is as important as the training itself. If you can, incorporate stretching into your normal routine. It helps balance your muscles and encourage relaxation.

Remember, the summit is only halfway. The goal is to arrive back at camp with a bit of gas left in the tank.

See you in the hills….

– Terri

Sellers Family EBC, Island Peak, Mustang and Tibet Expedition Recap

November 30th, 2013

After a full month of the ultimate Nepal adventure, with a stop in Tibet, the Sellers family expedition has come to an end. The Sellers began their expedition with a visit to the Khumbu, where they experienced the slow-paced, easy-going culture of the Sherpa’s as they trekked to Everest Base camp. After their visit to EBC, Scot and his Sherpa team successful made it to the top of Island Peak. Next, after three exciting weeks in the Khumbu the Sellers family travelled to the ancient and unscathed region of Mustang where they explored the famous “Sky Caves of Nepal” and the walled city of Lo Manthang. Finally they stopped in for a visit to Tibet where they toured the iconic city of Lhasa. Enjoy some of the amazing photo highlights from these outstanding adventures!

Traveling to altitude is an exciting challenge!

Traveling to altitude is an exciting challenge!

Many of Berg Adventures trips feature high altitude climbs and treks. People who are taking their first trip up high often have a lot of questions about what they should expect. Knowing what you will likely experience will help you prepare and alleviate some anxiety you may have about it. Just remember, people travel to, and even live at, high altitudes every day. You will experience some challenges and even discomfort at high altitudes, but your symptoms will subside as you acclimatize and certainly when you head to lower altitudes.
