Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
June 6, 2017 – Edge of the Shira Plateau
It’s 3:30 in the afternoon on the 6th, I’m calling from the edge of the Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful places in the world. End of the second day of hiking for the Austin Adventurists and what a great couple of days it's been, of course leaving Arusha was whirlwind and we knew we were heading to a different world and we were very quickly transferred to the different world here on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Our first view of Kili was as at sunset last night just before we got to the Machame camp, it was really beautiful after a long walk through the cloudy forest to see the sunset on Kibo, the central peak on Kilimanjaro, the one we are going to climb, the highest point in Africa.
Now I’m looking at the same summit in the afternoon here from the edge of the Shira Plateau, and the group has been doing great.
The trails were muddy down in the forest, dryer as we get higher and the trees get smaller. We are in the arid light zone that begins the middle part of Kilimanjaro;. we see giant Senecio trees today.
The group is really relaxed, they just like to walk along and play riddle games and have conversations along the trail, one of the most beautiful places in the world on Kilimanjaro. The staff is really a lot of fun, of course they are helpful and they are joining in on the activities and the conversations along the trail.
The spirit starting to build as this group gets ready to climb much higher toward the rooftop of Africa. We will keep giving you posts as we can, the photos will come slowly for a while, we are loving life on Kilimanjaro, the Austin Adventurists are doing great!
