Why climb with Berg Adventures

Suggested Reading List for Kilimanjaro Expedition

Climbing Kilimanjaro will pique your interest in natural history, geography and the mysteries of exploration of the African continent. Read Ernest Hemingway’s The Snows of Kilimanjaro, only if you really like Ernest Hemingway, the mountain only appears in the first and last paragraph. We list a few of our favorite books and materials to start with here.

For a list of recommended readings for the wildlife safari, see wildlife safari reading list.

Some of these books are available in Kindle versions. Electronic readers can be ideal way to carry travel books as they save weight and space.

Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa

by Audrey Salkeld and David Breashears

BAI Comment: Excellent stories about the human history, natural history of the mountain. Do not be put off by the fact that this is a large format photo book or that there is a subplot of a film group climbing the mountain. This is the best source for learning about Kilimanjaro before you go.

Kilimanjaro: The Trekking Guide to Africa's Highest Mountain - 2nd Edition

by Harry Stedman

BAI Comment: All the series guidebooks on Kilimanjaro are limited, and none have details for all BAI routes, but this one is the best for historical and cultural background on the mountain.

Amani

Julia Kochuk

BAI Comment: In 2009, Julia Kochuk travelled to Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Berg Adventures International. Amani is an award-winning short story inspired by Julia’s trip to Tanzania, complete with photos of the country and the students of the Linde Orphan School.

Julia will be returning to Tanzania this May with two other university students. With a donation of $50.00, you will receive the gift of Amani. One-hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Linde School, to provide supplies, food, and to set up an endowment to pay the salaries of certified, Tanzanian teachers. Amani is an excellent way to remember your adventure to Tanzania and the Linde School.
