Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
August 14, 2012 – Dream Come True, We Are on Kilimanjaro
After months of planning, dreaming and training we are finally underway on our journey to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro.
We arrived at the Londorossi Gate on the western edge of Kili after three hour drive In Land Cruisers. After signing in at the park headquarters we drove on a rutted small road to an obscure forest glade. There we found a few dozen Berg Adventures staff and porters waiting for us.
The staff burst into singing and dancing to welcome us to the mountain. The merriment began. This is going to be a fun crew.
We weren’t that hungry but the fried chicken and fresh salad that the staff had prepared for us were delicious. Now we are off. The forest trail looks dry today, so our first walk on Kili should be easy. It is great to be together and to be underway.
The cultural safari team is off! Long-time Berg Adventures safari guide Camillus will be their driver. Peter will be the guide and they will visit the people of the Meru tribe, the Chagga people and the Maasai.
Stay tuned for reports as we ascend higher on Africa’s highest mountain.
