Mount Aratat & the Wonders of Turkey Expedition Dispatches
Mount Ararat Expedition, September 5 – 19, 2019

Remote, iconic, challenging, Mount Ararat, in far eastern Turkey near both the Armenia and the Iranian borders, has been one of our favorite mountaineering travel destinations in recent years.
Turkey is vast and fascinating. We will begin on the history rich streets of Sultanahmet in Istanbul. They we will fly to central Turkey to hike and explore the enchanting “fairy chimneys” of Cappadocia.
We will start climbing Ararat from the Kurdish frontier village of Doğubeyazit. The summit is 16,800 feet (5140 meters) high. Capped with an eternal icecap, the book of Genesis says is where Noah Ark landed.
The Koran says that the Noah and the animals of the ark landed on Mount Cudi instead, but regardless, the mythical significance makes Ararat one of the most alluring of the Worlds Mountains to climb. Donning our crampons as we reach the ice early in the morning will allow us to have a true “top of the world” experience above the endless expanses of Anatolia.
We will send reports, tell some stories and send occasional photos from our journeys. Stay tuned here for reports of our expedition.
