March 7, 2008 – Beautiful Sunny Day of Climbing
Hi this is Tracy calling from Kossovo Camp (15,970 ft/4,867 m), which is our high camp on this trip. The group made it up here pole, pole (slowly, slowly in Swahili), with one step in front of the other.
We started down at Karanga Camp this morning. We had beautiful sunshine all the way up. Clouds just barely touched us with their cold winds but we did have the sunshine on our side for the whole day; the first time on the entire trip. This meant reapplying sunscreen constantly.
We made our way up to Barafu Camp which is the main city camp for most of the climbers that climb Kilimanjaro. Fortunately for us, BAI has a permanent camp here at Kossovo so we can avoid all the crowds. We were very happy not to be staying there because it is very busy. The houses there are very dirty and there are mice all over the place.
The sun was still shining on us after the trip up. This gave us a great opportunity to relax after the climb. We are all going to rest up and then have some dinner.
Everyone is still going strong. We are hiking as a group, which is not the typical and usual way of climbing, but we are all a tight group and supporting one another. Hopefully this will continue tomorrow as we get up to go for the summit, the top of Kilimanjaro.
Stay tuned!
