Suggested Reading List for Wildlife Safari Adventures
Your Berg Adventures guide will carry safari guidebooks for reference in your safari vehicle. You will likely find that your guide’s knowledge and story-telling abilities will take precedence over books while you are in your Land Cruiser.
There are plenty of good illustrated identification guides to East African wildlife, but Estes’ guidebooks are our favorite to take into your lodge room at night and catch up on background reading.
Some of these books are available in Kindle versions. Electronic readers can be ideal way to carry travel books as they save weight and space.
The Shadow of Kilimanjaro
BAI Comment: This is a fascinating book about a group of people who walked from the summit of Kilimanjaro to the Kenyan coast over the course of a few weeks. As he tells the story of their adventurous walk, author Rick Ridgeway also brings to light the rich natural and human history of the region. The book’s primary focus is the complexities surrounding elephant hunting and poaching, the development of the National Parks system in Kenya and the people who devoted their lives to protecting wild lands, wild animals and traditional ways of life in East Africa.
