September 8, 2017 – Lava Tower Camp!

On their fourth night on the mountain the team has reached a notable high point: Lava Tower Camp, elev. 4600 meters (15,100 feet). Erick called us in the early evening. He said after a couple of days of mostly cloudy weather the sky was clear and they have great views of the mountain.

Yesterday, Thursday, the team hiked to the Moir Camp, elevation 13,800 feet and they felt great, no altitude problems. Today’s hike to Lava Tower really put them at high altitude however and Erick’s report is “not even a headache in the group”. They are acclimatizing perfectly and the slow ascent rate is paying off.

Today’s hike was a ½ day trip in that the group had lunch at the Lava Tower Camp. After lunch they took about a one hour nap and then everyone climbed 400 meters uphill just to acclimatize a bit more. Now they are enjoying the great views around Lava Tower Camp before dinner and bedtime.
