Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
August 5, 2014 – We Are on Our Way to the Mountain!
A message from Wally at 9:00 am in Arusha:
We are driving with a group of the chief guides in three land cruisers. We are bound for the Londrossi Gate on the west side of Kilimanjaro.
Most of the guides and porters left Arusha by bus at 5:30 am this morning.
Arusha is green, fresh and cool this morning. We have a view of Mount Meru from the hotel very early this morning but it is cloudy now.
As you may know this is a special time of the year to be making our way up this great mountain. On August 10th, when the BAI climbers will be at high camp, the moon will present its closest encounter with Earth for all of 2014. It will be the closest and largest moon of the year and this will not happen again until September 2015. Though there is an average of 4-6 supermoons a year, this one is going to be larger than any one you will see this year and we will be lucky to be viewing it from the comfort of our special use high camp.
Stay tuned as we begin this wonderful adventure here on Kilimanjaro.
