Habari,
Aqui fala Daniel Tabak direto da Tanzania e estou muito feliz por essa oportunidade que o pessoal da Berg Adventures criou para a gente poder manter esse contato, e a minha ideia é fazer um relato de cada dia das coisas como elas estão acontecendo. Ontem nós chegamos aqui por volta de mais ou menos 9 horas da noite; fomos pegos no aeroporto e viajamos até o hotel, que fica mais ou menos a 1 hora de distancia do aeroporto.
Hoje, pela manhã, recebemos uma instrução exatamente de como a caminhada vai proceder, enfim, os detalhes de como preparar e realmente o pessoal foi incrível porque eu nao tenho a menor idéia de como preparar a mochila e como separar as roupas, são várias etapas, e eles realmente foram fantásticos porque organizaram tudo isso.
E, terminado isso, nós fomos fazer um tour, então, o que eu pensei nesse primeiro dia seria, enfim... eu fiz algumas anotações sobre o que é o país e isso poderia dar uma instrução para todos que estão nos ouvindo. A Tanzania é um país muito interessante que tem 1 milhão de Kmts quadrados de superfície e faz fronteira com algumas áreas meio conturbadas: ao norte, Kenia e Uganda; a oeste, Ruanda, Congo e Burundi; ao sul, Mocambique, Malawii e Zambia; e ao leste, o Oceano Índico tem uma área, uma ilha grande, Zanzibar, que faz parte da região litoranea. E apesar dele se encontrar numa área conturbada de vários conflitos que aconteceram, a Tanzania é um país pacífico e que desde 1961 é uma democracia.

... entao, como eu falava é uma nação pobre, é uma das nações mais pobres do mundo em que o PIB per capita está em torno de U$ 1500, mas se a gente pensar que em 2001 era U$ 274, houve realmente um progresso significativo. De acordo com os dados mais recentes, no ano de 2000 a 2008 houve um acréscimo significativo da capacidade produtiva e no ano de 2009 a 2010 houve uma evoluçao significativa: o PIB anual foi de mais de 6% - o crescimento do PIB anual foi de mais de 6%. Então, a economia basicamente é a agricultura e representa 45% do PIB e 85% das exportações.
Tanzanita (Tanzanite gemstone)
Existe tambem uma coisa muito peculiar aqui, existe uma pedra preciosa que se chama tanzanita e que só existe aqui. Nós, hoje, visitamos uma mina onde se faz a lapidação e essa é uma pedra muito curiosa porque ela apresenta esse aspecto que as nossas turmalinas tambem tem de várias cores, mas, muito peculiar, em que as cores violeta, vermelha e azul representam diferentes concentrações de vanadio que dá coloração específica para a pedra, um azul muito bonito. Existe em uma área muito pequena, 14 Km quadrados, e daqui alguns anos isso vai se esgotar.
Outro aspecto muito interessante dessa região é que ela se encontra intimamente ligada com a oncologia. Em 2011, foram completados 50 anos da descoberta de Denis Burkitt que identificou a correlação entre o linfoma de Burkitt e o cinturão da malaria existente na região equatorial da Africa, não apenas em Uganda, mas tambem aqui na Tanzania. Os linfomas representam 50% dos tumores pediatricos.Os resultados do tratamento melhoraram muito e dados de 2010 indicam a cura de 75% destes pacientes- em 2001, apenas 25% sobreviviam 1 ano. Como vimos, em swahili apesar de paradoxal, a frase é sábia." Onde existe o câncer, existe vida". LUTA E ESPERANÇA!

Finalmente, acredito que coragem nem sempre ela ruge dentro do peito, mas algumas vezes é aquela voz bem tenue que no final do dia diz que amanhã eu vou tentar de novo. E assim eu acredito que esse vai ser o princípio que vai nos orientar nesta subida com muita fé, determinação e acho que isso faz parte de todos os nossos dias.
E para terminar, uma palavra da linguagem "Chagga" que se diz, em que ela fala: LUILOSE e que quer dizer "estamos todos juntos" e, de fato, estamos todos juntos. Um abraço e até amanhã!

A Tanzanita tem aspecto similar a turmalina brasileira, que pode ser encontrada em diversas cores, dependendo da concentração de aluminio, ferro, magnesio, sódio, lítio ou potassio. Aqui é a Turmalina Paraíba (The Tanzanite has some similar aspects of the Brazilian Tourmaline, which can be found in a big variety of colors, depending on the concentration of aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Daniel Tabak reporting directly from Tanzania. I am very happy for this opportunity that the people of Berg Adventures have created for us to maintain this contact. My idea is to make a report every day of things as they are happening. Yesterday we arrived here around 9 o'clock at night; we were picked up at the airport and driven to the hotel, which is about 1 hour away from the airport.
This morning, we had a briefing about exactly how our climb will proceed and the details of how to prepare. The Berg Adventures staff was really amazing because I have no idea how to prepare the backpack and how to organize the clothes. There are several steps, and they really were fantastic because they organized it all for us.
Afterwards, we went on a city tour. I made some notes about the country and this could give an idea to all who are viewing. Tanzania is a very interesting country that has 1 million km² surface and it is bordered by some troubled areas: north, Kenya and Uganda; west, Rwanda, Congo and Burundi; south, Mozambique, and Malawi, Zambia, and to the east, on the Indian Ocean it has an area, a large island, Zanzibar, which is part of Tanzania. And although surrounded by several troubled areas with conflicts, Tanzania is a peaceful country and has been a democracy since 1961.
As I was saying, it is a poor nation, one of the poorest nations in the world where the GDP per capita is about US$1500, but if we think in 2001 was US$274, there was actually a significant progress. According to the latest data, in the year 2000 to 2008 there was a significant addition of the productive capacity, and in the year 2009 to 2010 another significant evolution: the annual GDP grew more than 6% - GDP growth rate was above 6%. The economy is basically agriculture which accounts for 45% of the GDP and 85% for exports.
There is also something very peculiar here, there is a gem called tanzanite and it only exists here. We visited today a mine where the gem is polished and this is very curious because it shows some aspects of our tourmalines (Brazilian gem) such as having several colors, but quite peculiar, the colors violet, red and blue represent different concentrations of vanadium, showing specific staining for the stone, a very beautiful blue. It exists in a very small area, only 14 square miles, and in a few years it will be exhausted.
Another very interesting aspect of this region is that it is closely linked with oncology. In 2011, we completed 50 years of the discovery by Denis Burkitt who identified the link between Burkitt's lymphoma and malaria belt in the region of equatorial Africa, not only in Uganda, but also here in Tanzania. Well, these are the thoughts of the first day - we take the first step in faith because you don’t have to see the whole staircase to move on as Martin Luther King, Jr. said.
Courage is resistance to fear, not absence of fear, and so said Mark Twain.
Finally, I believe that courage does not always roar inside our chest, but sometimes it is a tenuous voice at the end of the day that says I'll try tomorrow again. And so I think this will be the principle that will guide us on this climb, with great faith, determination. I think that is part of all our days.
And finally, a word from "Chagga" people that says - LUILOSE and it means "we are all together" and, indeed, we are all together. A hug and see you all tomorrow!
