Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
August 17, 2012 – Proud of Our Team of 118 Porters, Staff and Camp Workers
Friday the 17th of August, I am calling you from an elevation 4,550 meters above sea level, that’s about 15,000ft. above sea level. We are at the Lava Tower Camp. The team is doing great; the entire team is doing great. We had just a slightest occurrence of headache and a bit of stomach trouble; much less than normal for a group that is doing this traverse of Kilimanjaro. We got a strong team and we certainly are having a lot of fun.
Yesterday morning before we left the Shira Camp, or 2 days ago before we left the Shira Camp, we took the trouble to get all 118 of our porters, staff and camp workers together and as you know these guys give us a rousing welcome every time we arrive at camp and usually they send us off. Their spirits is carrying us across this mountain. But it is good to get them all in one place. We are carrying rubbish off the mountain, we are doing resupply, running ahead, making sure we secure good camp sites on the next spots along the trail so it takes some effort to get everybody together. It is really a fun time to have us all in one spot. This is a smooth efficient team I have to say. The Canadian team is doing great, I have to mention and they are certainly having a good time. This is a high point for us in this part of the trip, we are at a higher elevation than we slept last night at Moir Camp of course but we are actually at a higher elevation than where we will sleep tomorrow night at Karanga. We are introducing our bodies to the very high elevation than we will have to deal with as we move into a later stage of this trip, towards the Stella Point and onto Uhuru, the summit of Kilimanjaro, and then to our crater Camp. So, we will keep sending…(broken transmission).
