Why climb with Berg Adventures

Doc Martin 75th Birthday Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch

June 18, 2012 – Climbing to Kossovo Camp

It is 3pm on Monday afternoon, the 18th of June, and we have arrived at Kossovo camp 16,000ft/4,876m. This is the highest camp below the crater on Kilimanjaro. When we arrived here today Valentine looked at me and said, “What a great day!” The entire team has moved slowly, but they have been strong. They have been enjoying the climb as we reach the upper reaches of the mountain.

When we arrived today, the staff and guides greeted us with an encouraging set of songs. Their spirit was booming as we reached camp. They were led by our choir master Arnold, who also doubles as our gear manager. What a team of guides! Their energy is contagious. It is really a special experience to be this high on the mountain with such great people. It is a dream of Charles and I to have his family back at this high camp here at this beautiful spot near the top of Africa.

We enjoy settling down this evening, looking at the stars above. Tomorrow we will be climbing towards Stella Point and the Crater Camp at the top of Kilimanjaro.
