Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch
February 3, 2010 – Tarangire National Park
This is Dave and Darcy with our dispatch from Tarangire National Park. Today on our safari we saw giraffes, elephants, impalas, warthogs, ostriches, and many more animals along the Tarangire River. The park is a vast grassland with Baobab trees underneath a blue sky, exactly how you would picture Africa. The highlight of the day though, was the elephants. There were a few babies with their mothers and several big bulls wallowing in the mud trying to cool and protect themselves from the heat and sun. Some of the elephants and giraffes were so close to us that they completely filled my camera frame! I have a picture of an elephant’s eyelashes; now that is close-up and personal!
Tonight and tomorrow night Darcy and I are staying at the Tarangire Treetops Lodge. By all accounts it is said to be one of the best hotels in Africa. It's unique and very romantic! We hope to drink a whole lot of South African wine tonight [Darcy laughs], most likely from the fine folks at the Robertson Winery!
