January 26, 2010 – A Visit with the Chagga People
This is Darcy. Today I went to Marangu which is on the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. We visited the Chagga people and watched the local blacksmiths and carpenters. We went into a dirt cave which was made 200 years ago and was constructed to hide women, children, and animals during the Chagga/Maasai War. Marangu means “place of water” and we passed many streams and waterfalls throughout the day. It was a very interesting day and I’m now relaxing, looking at the beautiful Mt Kilimanjaro from my balcony.
