January 21, 2010 – The Safari Begins
This morning we left from Arusha and drove to Lake Manyara, where we toured around to see what kind of animals we could spot. We were lucky enough to see giraffes, zebras, baboons, and some buffalo. The real highlight was a whole herd of elephants that we came across, washing and playing in the water. There were a lot of adults and younger elephants and a tiny baby as well. At times we were only 20 feet away from them, it was absolutely incredible.
Our guide did a great job driving all day and finally we came up to our lodge at the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, which is unbelievably beautiful. We drove up to the lookout point to see inside the crater, which is one of the Wonders of the World and is “take-your-breath-away” beautiful.
So now we’ll spend the night in this beautiful lodge and tomorrow we’ll be going on a wildlife safari down into the crater. We’re looking forward to seeing some more wildlife, getting some more great pictures, and just taking in more of Africa!
