Carstensz Pyramid Expedition Dispatches
March 8, 2014 – The Team is Doing Great as they Move Out of the Jungle into the Sub Alpine Zone
Hello this is Brent, day three on the trek. Another great day, no rain. We left early in the morning and climbed about 1900 feet up to a little pass or ridge – we actually got our first glimpse of Carstensz Pyramid from here. We followed the ridge for another couple of hours and then three more hours to a place called Ridge Camp. Just amazing country here, in the sub alpine region; the flora is amazing with giant heather and lobelia trees everywhere and we are looking down on these vast rolling hills. It is amazing the sharp dichotomy between the rain forest jungle, with those emerald greens now moving toward more tonal greens in the sub alpine zone.
The one thing was really impressive is that we have not had any rain until we got into camp but it is like you are on a giant sponge, the way the ground holds water. For 1900 feet it is like we were walking on a peat bog, at 10,000 feet, all the way up to almost 12,000 feet.
The team is moving amazingly well. Tomorrow is another day. And again, the food is absolutely amazing. This food is better than I’ve had in Nepal, Bhutan or India, on any other climbing expedition. This sediment is shared by the team.
Anyway, everybody is doing well, everyone is healthy. Signing off for now I will give you a report after day four…. Bye for now.
