Carstensz Pyramid Expedition Dispatches

March 9, 2014 – The Team Prepares to Trek to Base Camp

Trekking to Camp on day 4 of our Carstensz Pyramid climb

Trekking to Camp on day 4 of our Carstensz Pyramid climb

Okay this is Brent calling, day four here and another amazing day! We dropped down from ridge camp at about 700 feet and we entered into another climactic zone for the flora. What it was is an amazing sort of rolling grassland marsh which is dotted with these groves of what appear to be palm trees. They are about 6 – 10 feet tall. They really look like something Dr. Sues would sketch in one of his books.

It was an easy day to camp, about 6 hours. Camp is about 11,600 feet on the shoulder of the whole Carstensz mastiff. The shoulder here is our main objective but I can’t believe how we have been lucky with the weather. We have had really no rain, except at night. It was really sunny this morning and there are no mosquitos! *Knock on wood* I don’t know what that’s about but we are travelling under a lucky star with no bugs and no rain.

The team is excellent, everyone’s health is good! Today we are going to go over to New Zealand Pass and drop down to our Base Camp. We will rest there and it will be a great acclimatization day.

If the weather stays like this it is going to be perfect. For now things are perfect! There are amazing landscapes and zones to go through. We have changed from rain forest to sub-alpine, rolling meadows of grass and now onto the shoulder of the mountain. It is really a wonderful trek!
