Why climb with Berg Adventures

Philmont Staff Association and Friends Kilimanjaro Climb and Safari Dispatch

June 15, 2011 – Resting at Shira I Camp

This is Bob Birkby checking in from Shira I Camp at 11,450ft/3490m. We had a fantastic day climbing from Big Tree Camp to Shira I Camp and we are more than 2000ft higher than last night’s camp. There was a lot of steep up and down hiking. We climbed over high ridges and dropped into deep ravines, but everyone did really well.

Along the way we passed through several unique ecological zones starting with dense old growth forest then right into much drier moorland with shoulder high vegetation. Late in the afternoon we came over the rim of Shira Crater, one of Kilimanjaro‘s three volcanoes. When we crossed over the Shira Plateau, the clouds parted and we had magnificent first views of Kibo, the youngest and highest volcano of our alpine destination. We are traveling into our spacious camp now, enjoying cups of tea and waiting for a delicious dinner and a goodnight’s sleep before continuing our advance on Kilimanjaro.

Today we left the forest behind us as we moved up the trail.

The sun cleared and we got great views from the wide-open moorlands.
