Kilimanjaro Expedition Dispatch

September 15, 2008 – Exploring the Ngorongoro National Park

Hi this is Ginny! Since the last time I sent a dispatch we have been out of phone range in the highlands of Ngorongoro National Park. We had a mobile tent camped and spent the first night near a Maasai settlement. We also met our Maasai guide there who took us on a beautiful hike in the national park where we saw the Maasai tend their cattle. We hiked up to a beautiful waterfall which is a water source for them. We then moved our camp to another Maasai settlement where there was a school. I had an opportunity to visit with the classrooms, talk with the children and meet the headmaster. I saw how the Maasai schools were run. It was very interesting.

We did another hike with our Maasai guide and today he walked us across what is called the ‘depression area’. We saw zebras, wildebeest, ostrich and a number of other birds. After driving back through the highlands I am back at a regular lodge for the night. Tomorrow we will pick up Dave as he arrives at the Kilimanjaro gates after his climb.

I am having a great time!
