Carstensz Pyramid Expedition Dispatches
March 14, 2014 – Another Full Value Day!
Well another full value day on the Carstensz trip! We left the River Camp in great weather; we had sun in the early morning light and thought our luck was holding. We climbed 1000 feet or so passed the Ridge Camp we used on the way in and then the skies changed and the weather built and the thunder hit and then dark skies. We had some rain on the ridge but it cleared up and we thought we had dodged another bullet. About an hour out of camp the skies opened up again and it must have rained about 2 inches in an hour! All those soft spots on the trail that looked like dirt or mud turned into bog. I broke out my Wellingtons for the first time and now I know why they are on the list because it is going to be a slog today onto our next camp. It’s going to be about 8 – 10 hours through the jungle.
Our camp right now is on the edge of the rain forest, we have left the sub-alpine zone and it is wet! We are getting the full spectrum here: from sun to torrential rain.
But everyone is in good spirits and everyone is moving well. We have one more night in the jungle, then to Sugapa, then onto Timika if our luck holds. We have been doing really well thus far with our climbing and our movement and I can’t see that changing. It is good to be going out but I think everyone is a little sad to leave.
On another note when we get out of the pouring rain and out of all the bog we will have a gourmet meal with Shrimp Curry and a bunch of other things. It is amazing what the cooks are doing! We can’t believe how well these guys cook over a fire!
