Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch

October 21, 2011 – Snow Days in the Khumbu

Yesterday we traveled from Pheriche to Lobuche. Today we woke up in Lobuche to a fresh layer of snow covering the ground. We had a nice walk today, but were happy to see our lodge at Gorak Shep. We moved into our rooms, changed from wet clothing and met for lunch in a warm dining room. Everyone is doing great with acclimatization - our oxygen saturations are all between 84 and 91 percent, which is excellent for this altitude. No Kala Patar for us today, but we will rest and relax in the lodge and be ready for Everest Base Camp tomorrow. We are hoping for clear weather, but we will have another snowy walk. Regardless, we know that our old friend Ang Nima, "The Ice Fall Doctor" will have a warm tent and a welcome for us when we arrive at Base Camp.

Yesterday at Thukla 15,100ft/4,602m above sea level, we took a lunch break.

Several of us are using iPhone apps to keep track of where we are - compass / altimeter/ GPS.
Bob Birkby, however, relies on his trusty Silva compass.

We put fresh khata blessing scarves and prayer flags on several memorials for friends and loved ones.... Bob paused for a few moments by Scott Fischer’s memorial, which had received a fresh coat of paint.
