October 11, 2011 – Out and About in Kathmandu
Today was another beautiful day and we took advantage of the good weather by visiting some of the major religious sites in Kathmandu including the Swayambunath, Boudanath and Pashupatinath.
Also known as the Monkey Temple, Swayambunath is a Buddhist site with many signs of Hindu influence. Boudanath is the largest stupa in Nepal and is located at an ancient religious site which was along the Tibetan trading routes for centuries. Today the neighborhood surrounding this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to many Tibetan refugees and is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Pashupatinath is a major Hindu site that is a pilgrimage site each spring and is one of the world’s most important temples for Lord Shiva.
