June 17, 2010 – Practice Climbing Skills

Here is Leila Silveira reporting from La Paz. Yesterday I arrived here with Chris and it turned out that his acclimatization has not been as good as we hoped. Being an athlete and extremely strong, he was managing to go strong even though his oxygen saturation was extremely low. Unfortunately he will have to go home. Michael, Chris’s father, returned to La Paz this morning to join us.

The descent to La Paz helped Chris a lot and he is feeling like his old self again. We went for a walk along Prado to do some last minute shopping and also to make a quick stop at American Airlines to change their tickets.

Back at base camp in Condoriri the team spent the day learning climbing skills: moving along a fixed line, the use of crampons and ascender, just to name a few. After the morning practice they had lunch and went to the Nido de Condor glacier to put the new techniques to practice. Everyone is doing great, acclimatizing well and getting really excited about their upcoming climb!
