Seven Days in Tibet Expedition Dispatch

May 27, 2010 – On the Everest Base Camp Trail

Hello from Andrew and Doug on the Everest Base Camp trail.

Today we drove 90km from Gyantse to Shigatze, the second city of Tibet. We drive along the fertile Nyang Chu River valley, which Tashi indicates is one of the best agricultural areas in Tibet. Barley is the principal crop. We stopped to visit a water-powered mill in which the barley seed is ground into flour. We reached our hotel, the Shigatze Hotel,in midmorning. The accommodation here is comfortable.

In the afternoon, we visited the Ta Shi Lhun Po Monastery, which Tashi indicates is one of the 6 largest monasteries in Tibet. The monastery was founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama. It contains a Buddha statue that is 26 meters high, as well as many other statues and artifacts. Because today is the anniversary of the attainment of enlightenment by Buddha and also the anniversary of his death, there were many pilgrims at the monastery. After this tour, we rode in a rickshaw to a Tibetan shopping area known as Walk Street. We toured around this area, with its many shops and abundance of goods. Nothing caught our attention and we walked back to the hotel.

Tomorrow, we travel some 240km to Shegar (New Tingri). Shegar is at 4,300 meters. This will be our jumping off point for the drive to Everest Base Camp early the following morning. We'll be out of internet range for the next couple of days, but we'll get caught up when we return to Kathmandu on May 30.
