Aconcagua Expedition Dispatch
January 16, 2020 – We Have Made it to Nido de Condores, 5550m, 18,200ft!
Nido de Condores (The Condor's Nest) is Camp II of the three mountain camps above the Plaza de Mulas base camp. It is a wide open expanse at very high altitude. The elevation of Nido is closer to the elevation of Camp I on Everest than it is to Base Camp on Everest. It is nearly as high as Crater Camp on Kilimanjaro and it almost as high as the summit of Mount Elbrus in Russia!
On Wednesday, Joe, Shannon and Patrick along with the BAI guides made a "carry" from Plaza Canada to visit the Nido camp. They made the ascent in about 3 1/2 hours which is excellent time. Osvaldo reported that the team did not move fast, they just moved steadily, which is what it takes to have success on a big mountain.
On Thursday they returned to the Nido Camp to spend their first night there. On Friday they will do a "carry" toward Camp Berlin, the high camp on Aconcagua.
As you can tell from the pictures, the weather continues to be awesome. Not only is it clear: Osvaldo reports that there is very little wind (by Aconcagua standards).
Good luck! The weather report is good for the upcoming weekend and beyond, so there could be a lot happening up high on this mountain soon!
