Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
October 20, 2015 – Team Vancouver Successfully Reaches Everest Base Camp!
I can’t believe how blessed we’ve been with the weather; clear skies and almost no wind. A superb October for this trip and it continued for us above 17,000ft/5,000m at Everest base camp.
We left Gorak Shep and started walking at about 8:30 this morning. We then ascended down into the Khumbu glacier. This is a very wild, active place and it’s probably not what most people imagine. Just the trek into base camp is a glacier walk and once you arrive, you see absolute wildness!
If you’ve only experienced this place through the movies, stories and photos, you will not have the full experience until you see it face to face. It’s a living and wild glacier.
There is not much for flat ground there. The tent platforms used in the climbing season are broken up as the glacier moves and pushes down.
Once we arrived at Everest base camp, we enjoyed a delicious lunch and got our group photos. There is awesome beauty in every direction you look.
The Berg Adventures staff and I feel privileged to be with this team. We’ve had a great experience on this journey up the homeland of the Sherpas to Everest base camp. What a team, thank you Rob, Chuck, Gordon, Alison, and Leah!
Our adventure is not over yet! Stay tuned as we report about the next phases of our trip. Everyone is feeling great and excited about what they have accomplished physically, spiritually and emotionally here. It’s truly a memorable team.
I bid you farewell for now as we sit back, at our lodge in Gorak Shep, and watch the beautiful sunset.
