Aconcagua Expedition Dispatch
February 3, 2015 – The Dirty High Altitude Dozen
Okay it’s about 6 PM on the 3rd of February. The Dirty High Altitude Dozen has moved in to occupy our Camp II, Nido de Condors Camp 18,300 feet / over 5,500 meters.
It’s still beautiful weather. It’s interesting about the weather on Aconcagua right now. It’s so nice that it’s a problem. It’s been so warm that especially at Plaza Canada the meltwater from the snow and glaciers runs down so thick that it is full of mud. Here at Nido de Condors we have better water. Elisa commented to me, “why doesn’t this look like the pictures in the brochures and the dispatches of Nido de Condors?”. And that’s because there is always snow out in the flat part of this camp and looking up towards Aconcagua. This year the snow is all gone. So dry seasons on Aconcagua, warm season so far. Not much wind compared to normal Aconcagua conditions. Although we do feel a pick-up from time to time and who knows we may see some more in the coming days.
We have an advanced Base Camp here basically. We have everything we need. Maria is doing a superb job cooking. Some of us are not taking huge amounts of food because it’s difficult for the body to digest food at this altitude. But what we do eat is very delicious. Everybody is well hydrated and happy to be this high. We still have a long ways to go though.
We will take care of ourselves and prepare and continue to acclimatize before we make out summit attempt.
We will keep you posted!
