Jussi Westergren’s Aconcagua Expedition Dispatch
February 11, 2011 – Vina Cabos, Our Third Vineyard
By now it had occurred to me that doing a Jussi Westergren one day wine tour was something like climbing Aconcagua all the way from Horcones to the summit in one day without stopping. If anyone viewing this dispatch is interested in visiting all these beautiful vineyards in Mendoza Province, make no mistake, this should be a minimum three day wine tour—five days would be better to allow for proper acclimatization (i.e. rest).
Our tasting room at Cabos—on the left in the photo is our sommelier, Pablo. Pablo loves wine and is a great listener; he absorbs information from visitors about great wines of the world.
We were welcomed by Marianna, Manager of Marketing and Sales at Vina Cabos.
Soon after we arrived Jussi spied an intriguing wooden box complete with a key and a rolled document. It reminded Jussi of an old fashioned telephone, so he began to make calls.
He then handed the phone over to Mariela.
Soon we were joined by one of the owners, Andrea Marchiori. Andrea and her husband Luis Baraud, along with Paul Hobbs of California, are the owners of Vina Cabos.
Seated for our tasting, Jussi began to ask Pablo if we might taste the very finest vintages that Cabos had to offer. Pablo apologetically explained that they did not understand who had been coming and that their finest wines were not prepared for tasting. Jussi’s replied, “Well, we will just buy them, take them with us and taste them later.”
Little did we know that, this would lead to a vertical presentation of Vina Cabo’s finest wines in the same wooden case that Jussi had been making a phone call on when we first arrived.
Each bottle was lovingly placed inside the beautiful case.
Andrea’s daughter, Mili, and Mariela proudly looked on.
With the box packed and locked we made a group photo. Time to go.
Is this a legitimate purchase or some sort of Finnish heist?
Loading up to go—i t is nearly 4:00 PM and we still have not made it to lunch!
