October 25, 2010 – Another Leg of the "W"
Leila Silveira reporting from Torres del Paine. Today was a long day and the weather, which had been excellent for Patagonia standards so far, has not really cooperated.
There was wind, sun, rain, everything: you never knew what was coming next. The team started together this morning, but when they reached the area of Italiano Camp and the rain started to come down really hard, they split up. George and Reginald, whose motivation was to take photographs, decided to keep going 10 minutes further to a lookout where they had the views of the glacier and then directly towards the Paine Grande lodge. Sharon and Sue, the unstoppable, had no intention of not completing this leg of the W, so off they went with Roberto Carlos to the last lookout over the French valley. Their persistence was rewarded by improved weather and a good view of the heart of the Paine Massif.
Special credit to Sharon and Sue who have been contributing with many images on our dispatches. Sharon got a close up of the carrion eagle "Chimango Caracara", which is quite a unique specie, since most eagles are hunters and don't feed on carrion.
Sue has bought an amazing book about birds in this area and, together with Roberto Carlos who is happy to point them out to us, she has seen and registered many of them.
Roberto Carlos has mentioned that it is possible to see puma in the area where they are going tomorrow. Puma is the South American version of a mountain lion or cougar. We've got our fingers crossed in the hopes that we'll get a glimpse at one!
