June 22, 2010 – Getting to Sajama Base Camp

This is Leila Silveira reporting from Sajama base camp. Today we all woke up in great spirits. The beds and pillows in our lodge are really nice and comfortable.

The mules arrived early to take our gear to the base camp. By 9am, all the loads were ready. Sam and Terri managed to do some shopping in this remote place. They bought some beautiful hats made of llama wool.

The hike to the base camp was beautiful. We gained only 300m of elevation, but it took us around 4 hours because it was a very gradual uphill.

We arrived in the base camp and our staff was waiting for us with our tents ready and some popcorn and a snack. The weather remains the same; no rain and bluebird skies with no clouds. Now we're just hoping that it will stay like this for the next 48 hours. The whole team has acclimatized well and everyone is feeling strong for the climb.
