May 13, 2010 – Lobuche and the Everest Climbers Memorial
This is Leila Silveira reporting from Lobuche. Today we hiked from Pheriche to Lobuche, quite a serious elevation gain, over 1969ft/600m so we really took slowly. It is pretty common to have some mild altitude symptoms at Lobuche so we did everything that we could do to minimize any problems.
The high altitude lecture we had yesterday came in handy; everyone was mentioning some of Dr. Eric’s suggestions and advice as we continued up the trail.
We had a great long lunch and right afterwards we started the steep hill that takes us to the memorial for Everest climbers. Yesterday Mingma and Japiang had gone up there to build a special cairn for Brenda’s brother who had passed away recently. When we arrived, we had a special ceremony for him and it was really touching.
Then we continued our hike to Lobuche where tea and popcorn was waiting for us.
Included in today’s photos is a picture of the memorial cairn built by our Sherpa for Brenda’s brother Murray. This photo is included for Brenda’s family and friends, at her request.
