May 13, 2010 – Rest Day in Pheriche
This is Leila Silveira reporting from our rest day in Pheriche. The team woke up full of energy and pretty excited about our "rest" day even though we have anything but rest planned for the day!
A hike above Pheriche and towards Dingboche was on everyone’s schedule. Some were interested to go to the very top and others to just stretch their legs and climb up the ridge a little bit.
Pheriche is not exactly a warm place, therefore most lodges build a sun room or at least make sure to have a warm lounge. Our lodge has both and we sure enjoy it. It is great to have a nice warm place to relax, catch up with our reading and diaries, and have some tea and snacks.
After the hike we all met for lunch and went for a visit to the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA). Their daily lecture on altitude is a must-see if you are resting in Pheriche and plan to go higher.
Dr. Eric Nilles, the HRA volunteer doctor for the spring season, gave a great lecture and answered a lot of questions about high altitude sickness and other typical problems you can experience up here.
The team went to visit the clinic after the lecture and they all bought some t-shirts which HRA has for sale to raise money to run their facilities. All the donations are welcome!
Our lodge is located literally right next to the HRA and Pheriche's only internet cafe. We did see several of our members there catching up on their emails throughout the day.
In the afternoon, Ang Temba arrived with another Berg Adventures trekking group and we all had dinner together at 7pm and I also invited Dr. Eric from the HRA to join us. Dr. Eric is spending his last few days here as the season for the Pheriche clinic is just about over. He has plans to climb Lhotse, taking advantage of being so well acclimatized after two months in Pheriche. Good luck to him!
