Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
April 21, 2010 – Ljerka and Jeremy Arrive and the Team is United
This is Leila Silveira reporting from Kathmandu, and I'm happy to say that Ljerka and Jeremy have arrived. We are happy to be together, finally. Everyone has been affected by the ash cloud that was created by the Icelandic volcano, either by being rerouted, or in Ljerka and Jeremy's case, having to take a train and rebook a whole new flight . But the good news is we are all here and scheduled to fly out to Lukla only one day behind schedule, so our trek won't be affected.
The medieval city of Bhaktapur
Kerri and Maya took advantage of the extra day to visit Bhaktapur, a medieval and well-preserved city in the Kathmandu Valley, only one hour's drive from Kathmandu. They really enjoyed being away from the crowds and traffic of Kathmandu for a day. Arriving in Bhaktapur feels like stepping back in time.
They made it back to the Yak and Yeti just in time to meet Jeremy and Ljerka as they arrived from the airport. I thought that Jeremy and Ljerka would be exhausted after all the traveling, but on the contrary, they were so happy to be here that they didn't mind at all having to go out to run a few errands in Thamel, the Kathmandu shopping district. So off we went to purchase their sleeping bags, located in a shop that is quite off the beaten track.
We did some more running around and then I took Ljerka to have a foot massage so that she could relax from all the time spent on planes, trains, and in airport terminals.
Back at the Yak and Yeti, we quickly got changed and went out for our welcome dinner. Then it was straight to bed because tomorrow we are scheduled on the first flight to Lukla and need to be at the hotel lobby at 5 a.m.
Weather permitting, we will be starting our trek tomorrow. Stay tuned!
