April 13, 2010 – David Breashears and the Vanishing Glaciers of the Himalaya
World-renowned adventure photographer David Breashears is working on a large-scale project, photographing glaciers across the greater Himalayas, with the intention of referencing these against historical photos from the same locations. The project brings him and his team to Everest Base Camp this season.
The sketches for the gallery tent's design that David made back in Boston were perfectly interpreted by the tent makers in Kathmandu. The enormous tent platform on the glacial moraine had been created by the Sherpas and David's bubble level helped to straighten the support poles at the final stages of construction. This structure was brought to base camp in order to contain and display the photos from David's remarkable exhibit for the next week at Base Camp.
David's dedication and passion for this project is boundless. As we sat drinking tea at Base Camp yesterday he told us that compared to where we are sitting, Hillary and Tenzing likely sat 200 to 300 vertical feet higher on the ice of the Khumbu Glacier when they were here in 1953. The photos taken by David and his team this season will help to confirm this and will add greatly to the body of work being compiled by David across the Himalaya as he continues this project.
We can't wait to see this display open and to see climbers and trekkers from around the world have the opportunity to contemplate history, change and the power of nature from a gallery at 17,500 feet above sea level!
