"Joints In Motion" CARE Team Gokyo Trek Dispatch

November 12, 2009 – Six Team Members Reach Top of Gokyo Ri

Hi this is Temba calling from the top of Gokyo Ri (17,550ft). We awoke this morning to find that Sharon wasn’t feeling well. We decided it would be best for her to go to lower elevation to feel better. She descended to Machhermo with Sherpa Min Bahadur Magar where she is right now and she is feeling much better. The rest of the team started to make their way up to Gokyo Ri. Unfortunately George W. also fell ill with altitude sickness and decided that he too needed to go down to lower elevation. The rest of the team pushed forward to reach Gokyo Ri, a total of 6 members. The weather was cloudy and made it difficult for the team to view Mt Everest and other surrounding mountains. We waited 2 hours for the weather to turn around and then after taking in the views and the accomplishment we began to descend down back to Goyko for a restful night’s sleep.

From Goyko we will return back to Phortse using a different route along the eastern side of the valley.

We’ve checked in with Sharon and George and they are doing much better. The rest of the group is healthy and looking forward to a good night’s rest.
