NSNT Expedition for the Earth Trekking in Iceland Dispatch

September 11, 2016 – Hiking Through Fantastic Icelandic landscapes

It is just before 6 in the evening on the 11th and wow! we had a long day. We began walking at 8:15 this morning and we pretty much has been walking through this fantastic Icelandic landscapes.

Snow, steam, rivers, brilliant green grass, lava, sheep and for us, so far on this trip, cross country, virtually undistinguishable trails, really not trails at all, we follow posts that have been sunk into the tundra or the lava by local people. The land that we’ve been so far is maintained by local farming families, tonight we are at 3rd hut we are staying at and again we are staying in a hut that is maintained by local people. We are surrounded by the reserve and we will be walking in and out of it sometimes, we will be in more for the rest of our trekking time but this landscape that we’ve been in today up until the last few kilometers we’ve had it all to ourselves.

We loaded up our truck with our gear and this great large very good nature Icelandic man, obviously with Viking ancestors, the guy is really huge, with a great smile and is always helping us out hauling our bags on this pretty impressive 4 wheel drive vehicle he has. He always shows up ahead of us and he makes a mean lamb soup as well so he is a great guy to have along with support.

We walk cross country and see virtually no one , this is going to change, we‘ve joined the main trail about 3 kilometers back and this hut seems like is going to be pretty busy, there are tents from the main trekking trail that will be sharing a cabin with us. It has been beautiful!
