NSNT Expedition for the Earth Trekking in Iceland Dispatch
September 9, 2016 – Nova Scotia Nature Trust Expedition is Finally Underway!
We are driving along highway 1! The ring Road that encircles all of Iceland. We are driving the road in a counter clockwise direction.
Route 1 or the Ring Road is a national road that runs around the island and connects most of the inhabited parts of the country. The total length of the road is 1,332 kilometres, built on 1974, coinciding with the 1,100th anniversary of the country's settlement. The road is two lanes wide, one lane going in each direction
Rainy today, but the green landscape is soothing to drive past. There is steam and geothermal activity everywhere.
Our plan for today was to climb Hekla, 1600 meter volcano. It is the second most active volcano in Iceland with a major eruption occurred in 1947, and many minor ones since. But due to intermittent hard rains and high winds on top of the mountain we have decided to hike at lower elevations.
It is great to be here, and be surrounded by so much beauty, rain or shine!
