Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
April 26, 2016 – Kylie Reports from Pheriche
Good Evening from 14,000ft! We are in a town called Pheriche now after a few hours of trekking from Pangboche. Today was especially scenic (and lucky for us, short!) We had Ama Dablam AND Everest herself in the distance for a good while without a cloud in the sky. Temba has informed us that we have had exceptional weather since our trip started, and I couldn't agree more. I never thought I would be wearing a short sleeve t-shirt in the Himalayas.
Backtracking a bit, we had about a 6-hour hike to get from Khumjung to Pangboche yesterday. We walked through huge areas of rhododendrons, had constant views of the rivers and finally, conquered Tengboche Hill. We credit our wonderful performance on climbing Tengboche Hill to all the chocolates we consumed prior. Temba claims it helps us get up the mountain easier and we couldn't agree more!
Once we arrived at Pangboche, I immediately felt at home at Temba's lodge. Not only is it absolutely beautiful, my dad and I agreed it was the best meal we had yet. I am still in completely amazement that they are able to grow so many plentiful veggies at 13,000ft but they pull it off wonderfully. We had a HUGE green salad straight from the garden along with some comforting spaghetti followed by a homemade apple pie. My dad and I were seriously in food heaven.
This morning, we went to visit the Lama of Pangboche and received a blessing from him. It was a very cool, unique experience I will never forget. He spoke of karma and how important it is to use and spread your wealth for good, or else your karma essentially means nothing. We all left in silence, pondering all of the insightful things we had the honoring of learning from him.
Tomorrow we have a rest day in Pheriche where we will have the opportunity to visit the Himalayan Rescue Association and speak firsthand to the doctors they have here. We are excited about learning more on how to protect yourself from various potential situations while trekking in a mountain range.
