Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition Dispatch
November 25, 2015 – Emotional Summit Success on Fuya Fuya!
We had another great day! Our goal today was to climb the volcano Fuya Fuya at 14,061.68ft/4,286m. This volcano produced two eruptions and partially collapsed over 165,000 years ago. It is located around 3 crater lakes with two other volcanoes nearby. Fuya Fuya an exceptionally beautiful and little known climb. We will return here on future Berg Adventures Ecuador expeditions.
Although the weather wasn’t clear, thankfully it didn’t rain. The drier conditions made it much easier for us to climb. If it had been raining, the rich soil would have made the trail muddy and very slippery.
Always learning something new about the area, Joaquin showed us a plant used by the locals to cure high altitude sickness. Doreen, the pharmacist, loved it and grabbed a sample to study.
Today was a big day for Paul, getting to the summit was an emotional point for him. Howard mentioned that everyone at home was worried about Paul joining this trip, whether or not he would be able to manage the climbs. This comes from some challenges in his life and overcoming his fear of heights. Howard always believed in Paul, through much hard work and perseverance Paul did it!
The physical challenges of climbing, especially at altitude, in addition to any fears rising from the elements, often offers a great opportunity to push ourselves past our limits and see what we are truly capable of. This experience is even more significant when experiencing it on expeditions with old and new friends, who are with you every step of the way. Truly an amazing moment to share together!
