Alessio’s Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch

October 4, 2014 – Hot Showers, Private Bathroom and YAK Steak

Today’s episode of the Grizzled Mountain Man and his trusty sidekick Sweaty Mess will start with a safety moment. We have decided that it is important to return to the old faithful, Don't fall off the trail. See pic.

After yesterday big moment in visiting base camp, we are now on the way down. This is not to be confused with being "done". Today turned out to be one of the clearest days yet with a big beautiful blue sky and amazing views of the mountains.

Today’s stats:

  1. 18 KM trek (we are now past our Trudging stage)
  2. Dropped 1200M, it took us 4 days to trudge uphill
  3. Moved from "moonscape" to juniper trees to actual trees (all in one day)
  4. Transitioned from Diamox (altitude sickness medication) to BEER

We started out with some Nepali Flats, progressed to a couple of Nepali Downhill, but then there was a blissful 2km of Canadian Flats (See Photo)!

On the way out of Gorak Shep, we turned to look back at the valley that base camp is located in. The clear day made for some amazing photos. Next we progressed onto the moonscape (aka Glacial Moraine). This has extremely rough terrain with no clear path through. See the photos of the glacier and the tough trail.

The clear day made for some great photos at the Everest Memorials for the fallen climbers. The Grizzled Mountain Man still does not feel the need to climb Everest.

After the Memorial site, there is a Nepali Hill (see photo). This is one of the steepest hills at the high altitude. We passed a number of trekkers on their way up who did not seem very happy to be on the hill.

We are now at 3900M for the night and are very excited to be able to have hot showers, our own bathroom and YAK steak. We have been talking to our guides about Yak Steak for two days and for some reason tonight we did not need to order dinner (they are yet again taking care of us!!!)

Tomorrow we will trek to Namche...for wine!!!!

Till Next Time!
