September 30, 2014 – Rest Day in Pheriche
Today’s adventure of the Grizzled Mountain Man and his trusty sidekick Sweaty Mess, as always begins with a safety moment.
After arriving at Pheriche for a two-night stay, we attended the local First Aid Rescue Stations talk on Altitude sickness. This clinic is only open throughout the climbing season and is staffed completely by volunteer doctors. It was a very informative lecture on how to prevent altitude sickness and the signs to look for.
The Grizzled Mountain Man was so very impressed that he took the acclimatization days very seriously, as you can see in the below photo.
As today is an acclimatization/rest day, our guides suggested that we awake at 6:00AM and do a short, high altitude acclimatization hike. We climbed the "Hill" behind our lodge and proceeded up 300M, the top altitude was 4500M.
The reason the guides suggested the early morning hike is because the weather is clear, providing better views of the mountains. We were lucky to get some great views this morning.
Tomorrow, we will proceed to 4900M in Loboche. We viewed the trail as we climbed this hill this morning. See the below picture.
We are off to ensure we are listening to our guides, a nap is in order. It could be a very relaxing afternoon in the sunroom!
