Ecuador Volcanoes Expedition Dispatch
November 11, 2011 – Climbing Cayambe
The entire group began climbing in beautiful conditions under the bright moonlight at 1:30am. For most of the climb the weather was very good and they were optimistic about reaching the summit. However, as they climbed higher the weather began to deteriorate. At 10:30am this morning, Osvaldo called the Berg Adventures office to tell us that the group had reached 17,717ft/5,400m and that they were not going to be able to climb higher due to the poor conditions.
The team will now continue down the mountain and will travel to the Tambopaxi hot springs where they will have a day of rest and relaxation to recoup some energy and give their muscles a day to recover.
We congratulate the team for their strong effort on the first big climb of their trip. Their efforts will certainly pay off as they continue down the Alley of Volcanoes to climb Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in the coming days.
Note from the office: The team has since made it back to the Cayambe Hut where they are resting. Later this afternoon they will go to the hot springs where they will spend their rest day tomorrow.
