Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch

May 6, 2011 – “What a Climb We Had, What a Day’s Been”

Climbing Kala Patar

Climbing Kala Patar

It is 4pm on May 6th and I am calling you from the very summit of Kala Patar at 18,512 feet above sea level. The altitude measurement is according to Dennis’ GPS so I am sure it is very accurate. Well, what a climb we had, what a day’s been.

Our island peak climbing team came up first. They left quite a lot ahead of us from our lodge at Gorak Shep.

We reached our lodge in Gorak Shep by walking through the morning along the edge of the Khumbu glacier with beautiful views of the Llho-la , Nuptse and the other great peaks around Everest. We had our lunch once we got to Gorak Shep. As I said, the island peak team, Osvaldo, Min, Tom, Line and Mingma Sherpa, took off first and had a beautiful summit on top of Kala Patar. That is a great preparation for their upcoming climb of Island Peak.

Our trekking team came along behind. We actually were not sure whether we were going to see Everest from Kala Patar today because it has been quite cloudy. We received the good news talking to friends coming down from base camp, that yesterday at 4pm it was the first summit of the season of mount Everest and again early this morning, 5:30 am, the second summit.

The news spread down the valley quickly. We were happy to hear it and we were wondering if we were on a Team Mount Everest, because we have been walking on moving clouds for much of the day. But it was amazing: just as we were getting to the top, there was a hole in the cloud and there it was, The summit of Mount Everest! We thought of Lama Gueishe who blessed us a few days ago and wished us good fortune.

Mt. Everest comes out of the clouds.

Mt. Everest comes out of the clouds.
