October 20, 2010 – First Chance at Fitz Roy
Leila Silveira reporting from El Chalten.
Today was a long day. Last night we decided to attempt our hike to Laguna de los Tres, regardless of the weather, so we left the hotel at 9am. The entire trek was around 22 kilometres. We were lucky with the weather: there was some wind, and a bit of snow and rain, but nothing serious.
We were hoping for a view of Fitz Roy but didn’t get it today. We do still have another chance tomorrow.
I spent two weeks in this area a few years ago and never got even a glimpse of Fitz Roy, so I know well how special it is when the massive granite tower shows its face.
The last 1.5 kilometres of the trail was steep and more exposed and the wind started to pick up, but it didn’t stop anyone from reaching the top. After stopping to take some photos, we started out trek back to El Chalten. The last kilometre of our walk was on the flat main street of town. Our feet were sore! The warm showers before dinner felt great.
