Berg Adventures Joints In Motion Patagonia Trek Dispatch
October 18, 2010 – Life Inside Glacier National Park
Leila Silveira reporting from Perito Moreno Glacier. Last night Patagonia showed the team why it has a reputation for being windy. I actually slept through it, but from the reports I heard at breakfast, the wind was really blowing with full power. Two members of our group are from Saskatchewan so we have some experience with wind, but these southern winds at the tip of South America are a little more famous.
We all woke up on different schedules, since the glacier trek was scheduled to start at 11am and we weren't in a rush to get going. Most of us had an early breakfast and I have to say, the food here at Los Notros has been fantastic so far.
The group was given a great bag lunch in their own personal backpack. They took a short walk to the dock just a kilometre away from our hotel. Then they got on a boat which took them to the glacier where they were given crampons. The weather was reasonable for the first hour, a bit windy but no precipitation, but after that it began to rain. The entire glacier trek was two hours long. The weather has really deteriorated with strong winds and lots of rain which is creating a lot of noise on the roof here at the lodge.
After their hike, but still on the glacier, they were surprised by a table prepared by the guides with some chocolate, whisky and ice (broken from the glacier right on the spot by their guides with their ice axe).
They arrived back at the lodge tired, wet, but happy and ready to get inside and out of the wind for a nice hot coffee and some cookies. Stories of the day were enjoyed before everyone retired to their rooms to enjoy a hot bath. We will meet soon for dinner and talk about our plans for our next destination, the famous granite tower of Fitz Roy .
