Big Brothers Big Sisters Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
May 15, 2010 – Visit to Everest Base Camp
This is Leila Silveira reporting from Gorak Shep. We are back! We spent the entire day hiking to Everest Base Camp and back. The weather was beautiful and not too cold. We were quite warm the whole day except for a few gusts of wind here and there, nothing compared to yesterday on Kala Patar.
Doug decided to rest yesterday afternoon as opposed to climbing Kala Patar with the team and today he and Min prepared a nice pack lunch and went up Kala Patar on their own. This is Doug’s second time to Nepal with Berg Adventures and he visited base camp the last time, therefore this time he was more interested on making a full day of Kala Patar and so he did. We were in radio contact with him the entire day and around noon they reached the very summit of Kala Patar but if that was not enough, he decided to stay put up there for another hour and wait for Everest to come out from behind the clouds. Eventually it did and he got over 100 photos of his day climb to Kala Patar.
Meanwhile the rest of the team went to base camp and we were also rewarded by beautiful views and clear skies and warm conditions. We even saw a large avalanche on our way in.
Arriving at Base camp we went straight to the Berg Adventures camp site where we rested and had a great lunch which included vegetable sushi among other things.
Well, time to go down to Gorak Shep for our last night. Tomorrow begins our hike down the valley and eventually back to Kathmandu.
