Jamie Clarke’s Expedition Hanesbrands Everest Dispatch

April 20, 2010 – Jamie and Scott Move Back Up to Camp I

Camp I, at the top of the Khumbu Icefall and at the beginning of the Western Cwm, is located at 19,100 feet above sea level. Jamie and Scott’s first overnight trip to Camp I had left them both feeling weak with respiratory infections. Today, they started off early and strong, ready for a more extended stay in Everest’s majestic Western Cwm.

The guys started off at 4:00 AM. The colder the better in the Icefall. The brittle frozen ice is less likely to move than melting ice. Jamie climbs through icy jaws in the lower icefall, early in the morning.

This area of ice had collapsed just in front of Kami and our climbing Sherpas. The route crossed this thin ice bridge, which spans a crevasse that is typical of many that we cross in the Icefall.
