Why climb with Berg Adventures

Wilderness Medicine Conference at Everest Base Camp Dispatch

October 10, 2009 – Team Visits With Lama Geshi

It’s about noon on Saturday the 10th of October. Yesterday afternoon when we left Tengboche we walked for about 2 hours further up the valley to Pangboche. Just as we always do on the Berg Adventures treks we checked into our lodge in Pangboche, Ang Temba and Yangzing’s beautiful lodge. We had our tea and dinner in the skyroom at the lodge. A beautiful glass dinning room with views of Ama Dablam and Everest.

This morning when we woke again to these amazing peaks and others which surround us. This mornings lecture was given by Luanne about wild animal attacks and bits and prevention.

After the class we walked up to the upper part of Pangboche to a very special place for all Berg Adventures climbers and trekkers. We visited Lama Geshi who is a 78 year old scholar, he came from Tibet in the 1950’s and he has lived here in this valley consulting Lamas and Monks in the monastery’s and the local people. He also has sustained a reputation in recent years as a man who always takes time and care when demonstrating a great deal of compassion and wisdom when he blesses climbers of the high peaks in this area.

Then he blessed each one of us with a Kata and forehead head but from a spiritual man.

It is always a joy to spend time with this man; he has a great spontaneous laugh that breaks out occasionally. He asks questions and dispenses advice. Today asked us about our Gods in our countries and thought that all people worldwide would not be at war if they listened to their Gods.

He asked us as we continued on our trek to show kindness towards all living beings as we continued our journey towards Mount Everest Base camp and when we continued onward towards our home.

Each member of this group was sold on the Lama Geshi’s philosophy of life as he was presenting it today and his request will be in our hearts and minds as we move further up the valley.
