Everest Base Camp Trek Dispatch
May 21, 2008 – Back to Kathmandu on a helicopter!
It is about 12:30 on the 21st of May and it has been a quiet morning in Lukla because of low hanging clouds and no activity on the runway but just a few minutes ago the sirens sounded from the tower and five planes landed.
Our bags are now at the airport being loaded and we will soon be on our way back to Kathmandu. We are thinking a lunch buffet at the Yak & Yeti will be great and we are all eager to reunite with Doc.
We are all sad to be leaving the Khumbu but once we started to say our goodbyes to the staff we realized that we were ready to get going and to re-enter life in Katmandu.
We will keep you posted with all the stories of shopping and the touring when we get back to the city. Of course for those of us that will be heading to Bhutan after Kathmandu, stayed tuned for the dispatches that we will be getting to you from the land of the Thunder Dragon. Thank you for staying in tune with Berg Adventures!
Office update: The weather closed-in again in Lukla and there were no flights coming in; then the team met with a pilot who was an old friend of Ang Temba's who was returning back to Kathmandu in an empty helicopter.
Before they knew it, Deke, Tracy, Wally, Dennis and Caroline were on their way back to Kathmandu in a helicopter. Deke rode up front with the pilot and the rest of the group watched them talking through headphones about the villages and landmarks below as they flew the 58 minute route back to Kathmandu.
The group got to the Yak and Yeti around 4:00 PM, they all took long showers, and they are reunited with Doc!
Last night the group had dinner at Dennis' favorite Indian restaurant.
